Balthazar King

Balthazar King

Balthazar King is a ten-year-old racehorse trained by Philip Hobbs and is one of the leading British contenders for the 2014 Grand National, as he looks to add the Aintree crown to his CV, which also possesses a brace Cheltenham Festival successes.

Age: 10

Trainer: Philip Hobbs

Notable Race Wins:

Glenfarclass Cross Country Chase: 2012, 2014

Philip Hobbs's Balthazar King may have gained the accreditation of being a Cross Country Chase performer, but all that experience running round the idiosyncratic venues that house a multitude of differing obstacles will stand him in good stead for what will be his first crack at the Grand National.

Often seen plying his trade at Cheltenham during the last couple of years, the ten-year-old showed when winning the 2012 Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase at the Cheltenham Festival that he is a class act and that he should have no problems with the marathon distance he will have to face at Aintree on April 5.

He duly followed that 2012 victory up with another sublime staying performance to take the 2014 renewal when holding off Any Currency in a memorable finish and Hobbs is hoping that he can bulld on his 2013 Grand National effort in which he finished 15th.

A natural front-runner, Balthazar King will head to Aintree in fine fettle, but connections will be hoping that his Cheltenham exertions haven't taken too much out of him and he can produce the goods on the big Merseyside stage.
